Cane AAROM Flexion: A Simple Exercise to Improve Shoulder Mobility

The Cane AAROM Flexion exercise is an effective and controlled movement designed to help improve shoulder flexibility and strength. Using a cane for assistance, this exercise allows you to gently lift your arm overhead, promoting a greater range of motion—ideal for those recovering from shoulder injuries or stiffness.

How to Perform Cane AAROM Flexion

  1. Start Position
Lie flat on your back and hold the cane with both hands. Position the cane in front of you, with your arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Assist with Your Unaffected Arm
Using your unaffected (healthy) arm, gently assist the movement as you lift the cane overhead. This support will allow you to move your affected arm more easily.
  3. Lift Overhead
Slowly raise the cane over your head, reaching as far as feels comfortable. Focus on keeping your arm straight and avoid straining.
  4. Hold the Stretch
Once you’ve reached your comfortable range, hold the stretch for 3 to 5 seconds. This pause helps to deepen the stretch and increase flexibility.
  5. Lower with Control
Slowly lower the cane back down to the starting position, maintaining control and smoothness throughout the movement.

Tips for Success:

  • Keep your elbows straight during the lift, and relax your shoulders to avoid unnecessary tension.
  • Move slowly and smoothly—avoid jerking or fast motions.
  • Focus on breathing deeply as you stretch to release tension.

By incorporating this simple exercise into your routine, you can work on improving shoulder flexion and overall mobility. Consistency is key for seeing progress, so make this exercise a regular part of your recovery plan!
