AROM Internal Rotation: Build Shoulder Strength and Control

The Active Range of Motion (AROM) Internal Rotation exercise is a simple but powerful movement to improve shoulder function, especially after injury or surgery. It targets the internal rotators of the shoulder while promoting control and stability.

How to Do AROM Internal Rotation

Step 1: Setup
Sit or stand tall with a rolled-up towel tucked between your elbow and torso. This helps keep your elbow in the proper position throughout the movement.

Step 2: Position
Keep your elbow bent at 90° and your wrist in a neutral position.

Step 3: Inward Rotation
Slowly rotate your arm inward, bringing your hand toward your stomach.

  • Be sure to keep your elbow tight to your side.

Step 4: Return with Control
Move through your full, comfortable range, then smoothly return to the starting position.

Step 5: Focus on Form

  • Avoid bending or straightening your elbow.
  • Keep your arm from drifting away from your body.
  • Keep the motion slow and controlled.

This movement is great for building shoulder endurance, especially in the early stages of recovery or when reinforcing joint mechanics.
