The Cane AAROM Abduction is an excellent exercise for improving shoulder mobility and flexibility. It’s particularly helpful for individuals recovering from shoulder injuries or those looking to increase their range of motion. By using a cane (or similar tool), this exercise provides gentle assistance to help you move your arm in a wide arc, promoting better shoulder function.
How to Perform Cane AAROM Abduction
- Start Position
Lie flat on your back and hold the cane with both hands. Position your arms slightly out to the sides rather than directly in front of you. - External Rotation
Before beginning the movement, rotate your shoulders externally by turning your palms upward. This will help engage the shoulder muscles properly during the exercise. - Lift the Cane
Slowly lift the cane in a wide arc overhead, reaching as far as feels comfortable. Keep your elbows slightly bent and move in a controlled manner. - Hold the Position
Once you’ve reached your comfortable range, hold the stretch for 3 to 5 seconds. Focus on feeling the stretch in your shoulder and upper arm. - Return with Control
Slowly lower the cane back to the starting position with control, avoiding any jerky or sudden movements.
Tips for Success:
- Move through the motion slowly and steadily—don’t rush the stretch.
- Keep your neck and face relaxed while performing the movement.
- Focus on smooth, controlled lifts to prevent unnecessary strain.
Adding this gentle but effective exercise to your routine can help improve shoulder mobility and prevent stiffness. Be sure to practice regularly and listen to your body as you increase your range of motion.
